easy applique t-shirt – tutorial

I was reading through one of my favorite blogs the other day, Jones Design Company, and came across some ubber cute shirts she had made for her little ones.
I HAD to make one.
It was super easy, and turned out way cute.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • t-shirt
  • fabric
  • iron on interfacing (preferably double sided so you can stick it to the t-shirt too)
  • pencil
  • iron
  • scissors
  • sewing machine and thread
STEP ONE:  Apply interfacing to the back of your fabric per the interfacing instructions.
STEP TWO: Once adhered, use a pencil to freehand or trace your desired design onto the interfaced side of the fabric and then cut out your design.
STEP THREE:  Place applique on the t-shirt.  If using double sided interfacing, apply to t-shirt per interfacing’s instructions.  If using single sided interfacing, pin applique to t-shirt.
STEP FOUR:  Use sewing machine to stitch around the perimeter of your applique.  I used a straight stitch because I wanted a little fraying to show up around the edges, but you could use whatever stitch you prefer.  *tip – when going into a sharp turn, end with your needle down through the fabric, lift the pressure foot up, rotate the fabric, place the pressure foot back down and continue sewing.
Ta Da!  You’re done!
Now your little one has a one-of-a-kind, fun t-shirt that didn’t break the bank and only took you 20 minutes to whip up!
And, bonus, it totally gets better the more you wash it since it makes it perfectly frayed around the edges 😀
On a side note – Here’s Izzy on her way to her Kid’s Day Out program.  She LOVED her bunny shirt.
She looks like she’s going off to her first day of school with her little backpack on.

Great, now I’m sitting here having flash forwards of her going off to Kindergarten and then walking across the stage at her H.S. graduation…
