A Hidden Room You’ve Never Seen Before

Would you be surprised if I told you there was a hidden room you’ve never seen before in our home? If you follow stories on my Instagram you might have seen the room I’m talking about. Our home was built with a home theater off the playroom. Honestly, I didn’t have intentions to share this room on the blog or Instagram at all. Not for any reason other than I simply didn’t think it would be anything you guys would be interested in seeing. A few weeks ago I ended up sharing a couple of stories about the project on Instagram while I was painting and was shocked at the amount of interest there was. So, due to popular demand, I’m going to show you what we’re doing with this fun space.

Before

storage room

When we built we asked the builder if we could have the option to leave this space unfinished, more like an extension of our attic space, since we were going to use it solely for storage. Our builder wouldn’t do that and said we needed to choose a dark paint for the “theater room”. I just pointed to a dark grey on a paint deck and called it good. For almost seven years it had just been used for storage and exercise equipment. Now, what you’re seeing above is the room cleaned out. We had TONS of excess junk it there.

COVID happened and we decided to clean out the storage items and finally use this room as it was intended. We loved going to the movies as a family and really missed that big screen experience. I guess the side effect of COVID is that everyone is spending more time making their homes enjoyable. The theater room isn’t the only part of our home that will be changing due to it.

Progress

Six weeks ago I repainted the entire room Sherwin-Williams Green Black. It’s basically black, but with a hint of green for some character. The old sconces (boy oh boy did I hate those things) were replaced with modern brass sconces. It’s hard to tell in these photos what they look like since these are not quality photos.

We had a screen, projector, and in-wall speakers added to the room. We’re waiting on new speaker covers because the “paintable” covers turned out terrible. The A/V equipment is hidden in the long console under the screen which is actually three IKEA BESTA units.

My plan is to keep the floor space open for bean bags, but we really needed to break up the wall-to-wall carpeting. I ended up purchasing the same rug we have in our kitchen but in a 9×12. The color worked well with the Green Black paint, and you just cannot beat the price. And, my husband’s must have item, the electric leather theater seats are now in place.

Left To-Do

  • I have some amazing frames coming in for art
  • Paint air vents in the ceiling
  • New speaker grills
  • Style out (won’t be much due to the purpose of the room)

We have already spent a lot of time watching movies in here and are completely thrilled with our decision to use this space as it was intended. My husband and I even like to watch concerts up here because the sound is incredible.

So, what do you think? Is this what you were expecting when I said we had a hidden room you’ve never seen before? Stay tuned for the full reveal! To see more of this space, visit my IG Highlights titled Theater.

I wish I would have taken some photos before we had that room cleaned out. But you know how it goes, when you get in the mood for a purge you just dive right in!

I love the rugs in both kitchen and theater. Your link for the rug shows the color as Olive-Green-Charcoal. Is that the correct color? And…..the price on Amazon for
the 2’6″ x 9’6″ runner is $228 and the 9 x 12 is $700. That is quite a bit! Did you pay that much for them?

The rug color is correct, but the prices have recently jumped WAY up. When I purchased them they were no where near the price they currently are.
