adding a drum shade to a ceiling fan

I am happy to report – I no longer have an ugly fan light!!!
Isn’t she pretty!
And, she’s a cheap date too.  I only spent $20.  Boom.
Want to pretty up yours?  Here’s what you’ll need:
  • drum shade (with spider fitting)
  • connector
  • nipple fitting
How to do it:
STEP ONE:  Remove bulb shades
STEP TWO & THREE:  Locate and remove end piece.  I don’t really know what it’s called so that’s what I’ll be calling it.
STEP FOUR:  Slide pull chain through connector and screw into place where the end piece used to be.
STEP FIVE:  Screw nipple into connector.
STEP SIX:  Place drum shade over the nipple.  This would be a little easier if my shade would have had only 3 spokes instead of four, but it still fit fine.
STEP SEVEN:  Screw end piece into place to secure the shade.
DONE!
Super easy, and really changed my fan’s look.
I also added a new chain pull I found at Lowes for about $3.
You can see some of the changes I’ve been making in my bedroom in the after photo.  I can’t wait to tell you guys about those white drapes.  May not sounds like much, but trust me, you’ll love it.

So, whose gonna be upgrading their fan this week???  You???

I'm so going to try this, looks great and your old lights are exactly what I have now in the bedrooms! Thanks so much for sharing!

The fan looks great – our ceiling fan doesn't have a light kit on it, so I can't steal your idea. BUT, in our dining room makeover extravaganza, a new drum shade is happenin' and I'm pretty darned excited about it.

YES! love. I don't think that will work on the fan we have bc of the light that's on it, but yours is AWESOME! can't wait to see the rest!

This looks great!!! I have always wanted to do this, but never "manned up to make the big change. Maybe I'll do it now to one of our fans!

So easy and a nice change. It modernizes the look.

Wow! I think this is a great idea! Aside from making the ceiling fan look stunning, it will also cost you less than $30 – that’s a real steal! The good thing about that is it will help diffuse and control the light coming from the bulbs, which will make it easier on the eyes. Good choice for a DIY!

I love this idea and you make it look so easy. I've got 2 fans that would look so much better with this. Thanks for the detailed pictures too–I'm definitely a "visual" learner!

Great idea! What size shade did you use?

  18. Nissa Sultanian Avatar

Where did you get the connector? And what is it called?

    1. Shelley | Crazy Wonderful Avatar

Hi Nissa! It's called a coupling and I picked it up at Lowes in the lighting accessories department.

Great idea can you let me know where you purchased the shade please
    Thank you

Hi Jose! Unfortunately this was a lamp shade I had laying around for a while and I cannot recall where it was purchased. You can find lamp shades almost anywhere: Target, Homegoods, TJMaxx, etc.
