It has been a while since I did my first Buy or DIY so I thought it would be fun to do one again. If you missed my first one, Buy or DIY is where I look at a designer room and recreate the look for less. What items would I DIY to save money, and what items would I source elsewhere for less. This bedroom designed by Amber Interiors has me swooning. Her effortlessly cool style draws me in every time!
What I would buy:
VINTAGE RUG: Start from the ground up with a beautiful vintage rug. You can find these in all price ranges and sizes with a little looking. Etsy is a great source. I found this large 7.2’x11′ vintage rug for $850. Yes, it’s still pricey, but we’re saving in other areas.
NIGHTSTAND: This nightstand has a similar look and feel to the original, but at $399.
BENCH: The original bench is incredible, unfortunately it’s also incredibly expensive coming in at $2,995. This bench is a great alternative at $299.
MODERN SCONCE: You can find the original here, but this one is such a close match and saves you $124!
LAMP: This glass lamp has the same blue glass as the original at $174. Or, save even more with this glass base and this shade currently totaling $51.08!
BEDDING: What stands out the most is that beautiful grey tassel blanket. This one is a beautiful option and comes in a bunch of different sizes. BUT, you could totally DIY it too! Find a blanket you like and add your own tassels! She also used a dark blue quilt similar to this one.
DECORATIVE BEADS: Give your lamp a global feel by adding these bone beads at $24.99.
WINDOW COVERINGS: Keep your window coverings simple and clean. These natural roman shades look incredibly similar to the originals at a great price point.
What I would DIY:
SLIPCOVERED BED: Slipcover/reupholster your current headboard, or build a new headboard and frame using incredibly affordable painter’s drop cloth (it has a great neutral color and texture). I slipcovered an entire sleigh bed in our guest bedroom with it. Check it out here. For my slipcovered bed I spent $40 on drop cloth (the original bed is $4,600). This saves you TONS of money on this look!!
PILLOWS: Pillows can add up and get expensive fast. I would purchase a couple of key pillows like this striped one and this lumbar one, and then make all the others. If you’re new to sewing, pillows are a perfect entry project and you can find tons of beginners tutorials online. Make a couple of solid black ones, and then use that same solid black fabric to make some DIY black mud cloth pillows like I put together here and you can also make my other DIY white mud cloth pillows here. Again, major savings!
WALL TREATMENT: Is it the texture in that brick focal wall that’s got you in love? Give your room the same impact by doing an affordable and simple DIY shiplap treatment on one wall. Check out how I did it for less in my son’s bathroom, my daughter’s bathroom, and also the guest bathroom.
Let me know your thoughts on this look for less! What would you try to DIY?
