Inspiration
This has without a doubt been a very difficult year with all that is going on in our world. A few months ago my husband lost his father to Covid. His dad lived alone and had several generations worth of belongings we had to sort through. When it came to dinnerware a large portion of the older, valuable collections remained in storage or were given to my husband’s aunt. There were a few vintage pieces from my father-in-law’s home that we decided to bring home with us. Those vintage pieces became my inspiration for this Fall table. It’s a combination of old and new in a casual, comfortable style.

Greenery & Candles
I’ve not been inside a grocery store in ages which is normally where I pick up my flowers. This year I went to my yard to find clippings for a centerpiece. Luckily for me (not so much for my neighbors) my front bushes are overgrown giving me plenty of long branches to choose from. Those simple yard clippings set the casual vibe I was going for with this table.
Due to the way the greenery spilled out of the vase I decided on low votives so there wouldn’t be a fire hazard. I did a mix of different styles in varying silver tones. Candles of any type always add a special touch to a table.
Candle Tip: If you are concerned about your centerpiece being a fire hazard due to how it hangs over your votives, you can use these LED votives. They even flicker like real candles!

Table Linens
In keeping with the casual look I refrained from using a tablecloth and let the wood table shine on its own. I pulled out my favorite mismatched set of linen napkins and kept things simple by placing them in-between the soup bowl and plate. What I love so much about linen is the relaxed look it has.
Napkin Tip: If you don’t have a complete set of napkins for all the place settings at your table, mix in a complimenting napkin set or have the head chairs stand out with a different pair of napkins.

Dinnerware & Flatware
At the beginning of the year I replaced our everyday dishes with this classic white coupe dinnerware. You just can’t go wrong with classic white dishes. They go with anything and are easy to dress up or down.
The vintage mid-century modern flatware was found at my father-in-law’s house. I loved the simple lines and the unique shape of the spoons.

Vintage Glasses
After the estate sale had closed we found a set of glasses that were forgotten about in a cabinet. They’re a very common vintage style (found a set of six here), but I really liked them so home with me they came. I mixed the glasses in with the other more casual pieces on the table to add a bit of interest and sparkle.

Wood Serving Boards
To play up the wood tones on the table and other pieces in the dining room, I added a couple of wood serving boards to the table top. One holds bread and a water while the other holds vintage salt and pepper shakers and a small marble bowl with nuts. The boards not only add another layer of texture to the table but group those items together. Think of them like trays on a coffee table that tie smaller items together.

Fall Decor
To brought in a little more Fall texture to the space I added some dried florals to the top of our piano. These dried and bleached flowers are so light and airy. I placed them in a vintage crock that tied in with the other natural elements on the table. The little paper mâché bowl and wooden beads were a DIY I made during the first part of stay-at-home orders.
