christmas home tour | part 1

December 9, 2016

It’s Christmas Home Tour time!  Are you still loving seeing homes decorated for Christmas, or are you over it?  I hope you’re not over it because I’ve got a lot of photos for you today.  I’ll include a full source list at the end of the post.

This year is probably my most simple Christmas decor year yet.  I don’t have a lot of Christmas decorations to begin with.  We have our fake tree, some fake garland, ornaments, a few bottle brush trees, and stockings.  Other than our wreaths that hang outside, that’s pretty much it.  I was going to add to it this year, but decided to roll with it instead.  And guess what?  I think it’s my favorite yet.

In our entry I hung this beautiful Into the Woods wall hanging by Vol25.  Not only can it last all winter, but I can see this staying put year round.

Further in the entry you come across my happy accident.  Sam let his stuffed puppy dog take a ride down the stair railing and it crashed into and broke one of my glass lamps.  I haven’t shopped for new lamps so I cleared off the buffet and grabbed what I had.  I had a lot of vases.  I filled some with Christmas tree clippings I got for free from the home improvement store (they were happy to let me take them off their hands), and the others with lights.  Hanging over the mirror is a simple wreath I made using wire and fake Christmas greenery.

We purchased a new Christmas tree at the end of the season last year.  The slender shape fits this part of our living room so much better!  Part of the reason I was thrilled to see our old tree go was because the lights quit working.  I’m beginning to think trees just don’t like me.  I had picked up the house the other day to take these photos and then ran out to pick up the kids from school.  Came home to find a section of lights had gone out.  WHY???!!!  I didn’t want to chance the house getting trashed while I looked for and strung up a new set of lights, so I just went with it.
This year’s mantle is very similar to last year.  I went with fresh garland again, which smells so good!!!  I did make new stockings this year, and am completely in love.  I’m telling you, I can’t get enough black and white plaid!  The little elf one is our dog’s stocking.  Here’s a tip:  Stuff tissue paper or plastic grocery bags into empty stockings to keep them from looking flat and sad.
This is such a fun and easy way to create a Christmas vignette.  Fill the bottom of a vase of an apothecary jar with Epsom salt and add in anything you can think of.  Bottle brush trees, tiny houses, figurines, toy cars with trees on the roof, pine cones, you name it.

The breakfast nook got a little snowy makeover, even though you can’t tell a darn thing is going on in there 😀
It’s so incredibly hard to photograph this, but we made paper snowflakes and taped them to the windows.  It looks great in person, just not in photos.  This is a fun craft you can do with the kids (it was my daughter’s favorite part of decorating) and you don’t have to spend a dime.

That’s it for Part 1 of my Christmas Home Tour.  I’ll be back next week with the dining room!  Until then, here is a little sneak peek.  Updated: Click here for Part 2!

It looks amazing! Is the stair garland artificial?

Thank you, Florence! The stair garland is artificial. I purchased it several years ago from Michaels, but I believe they still sell it or something very similar.

Hey, if the lights go out on your tree there is a gun you can get that will help you replace the bulbs causing the outage. We still have the tree Denise gave me 14 years ago. Thomas just has t9 fix a few lights every year!!

Love, love, love your white and black palette and how you make it all cozy and cheery for Christmas! Your staircase – WWWWOW – it is gorgeous with the garland on it. And I love the lights in the jars, are they battery operated? So pretty. I need to actually finish decorating and put away the boxes so we can enjoy it all. Thanks for sharing all your pretty ideas and details for me to steal! 🙂

Thank you so much! No, I’m sorry, I don’t make them to purchase, but I have seen similar for sale on Etsy.
