I’ve been sitting on publishing Izzy’s birthday party post due to all that is going on. But, after more thought, I decided to go ahead with it. There will be more birthday parties. I promise. We will be gathering together face to face with our friends and family for celebrations again soon. Until then, we can still gather inspiration and pin those party ideas for later. Having said all that, I bring you Izzy’s Citrus Birthday Party.

Invitations

As I always do with birthday parties, I sent online invitations. The great thing about online invitations are that you often have multiple color schemes to choose from, editing is quick and easy, and you can track rsvp’s as well as send out updates. We found this citrus online invitation from Paperless Post and that set the tone for the rest of her party.

Citrus Party Decorations

Izzy requested a small party (I was all too happy to oblige with that) and wanted it to feel grown up. There’s that almost teenager kicking in! We decided to keep everything very simple and just set a nice table. What I like about this citrus birthday party is that minus the balloons it doesn’t scream birthday, and would be great for any summer gathering.

Citrus Centerpiece

This was such a fun and easy centerpiece to pull together. I just picked up some citrus fruit from the store, sliced a few in half, grouped them around the cake stand, and added in some green leaf clippings from the yard. The color is beautiful and it smells amazing too.

Lemon and Blueberry Birthday Cake

In the beginning of this post I said it was the invitation that set the tone of the party, but I was wrong. When brainstorming ideas, Izzy said she wanted a cake that had lemon slices on top. THAT was what lead us to a citrus theme. My mom had been raving about this lemon blueberry layer cake from Sally’s Baking Addiction so we used that as our cake base. I then did a naked icing, and decorated with sliced lemons (toothpicks are great for keeping them from falling off the sides), blueberries, and some camomile flowers.

Place Settings

Izzy and I came across these adorable lemon shaped paper plates and knew they had to happen. The girls were going to have pizza for lunch so I used our everyday white dinner plates, layered these fringe striped napkins, and then added the fun lemon plates for cake.

For drinks I picked up Izzy’s favorite Limonata San Pellegrino in these cute glass bottles and tied on striped straws.

Activities + Party Favors

Like most girls this age, Izzy loves to craft, and wanted to do a couple of craft activities. We hit two birds with one stone by having the activities also be the party favors.

Lemon & Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Making your own scrub is quick, easy, and was fun for the girls. I found this scrub tutorial from Adrienne Elizabeth. For parties you want things to be as easy as possible so I set up a station at the kitchen counter. Each bowl had a pre-measured portion of coconut oil inside to cut down on mess. I then let each of them measure in the sugar, lemon essential oil, and mix it all up. They then added it to a small mason jar and packaged it up with a clear bag, wooden spoon, and twine.

Lemon Pom Pom Keychains

This craft and favor turned out so cute!! We used this pom pom tutorial from Lia Griffith. Again, to make things run smoother I measured out yarn ahead of time, made each girl a cardboard template for making the pom pom, and pre-made the felt flower. The girls created the pom pom, trimmed them into a lemon shape, and added the keychain and flower.

Pom Pom Tip: I learned this the hard way. If you’re going to measure out yarn ahead of time, roll it up into a yarn ball instead of wrapping it around your hand, sliding it off and calling it good. It will just get tangled.

Izzy’s Birthday Interview

We have a tradition where the kids answer the exact same questions every year for their birthday. It’s so fun to see what changes and what stays the same over the years. This girl of mine has grown up so much this past year I can hardly handle it! She makes my heart smile.
