You guys, I did it!!!! I finally built the DIY upholstered bed I have been talking about for a couple of years now! And… it’s everything I dreamed it would be!!! There is so much that went into this bed, and I know you’re going to want all the details, but I can’t wait to share her with you anymore. Today I want to show you the pretty stuff and then I’ll be back later with details on how I did it. Are you ready?

Our Old Headboard

I purchased our old headboard nine, maybe 10 years ago. While I still loved the grey color I wanted a cleaner look and a complete bed with matching upholstered side rails. The other thing about this headboard that was bothering me was the rattling sound it made every time you got into bed or rolled over. It had a good run, but I was over it.

My Inspiration

The bed I couldn’t get out of my head was this beauty designed by Amber Lewis. But it was out of my league at $5,100 before tax and shipping for a queen. So I used it as inspiration for my build.

DIY Upholstered Bed

Here’s what I built for a total of $459!!!

Pretty dang close, right?! Ok, let me show you what it looks like all dressed up.

DIY grey upholstered bed

My goal was to make sure it looked high end. The last thing I wanted was for it to look like a DIY. I used nice upholstery fabric, didn’t skimp on padding, and focused on details that would finish it off. With this simple design it was adding top stitching around every seam that gave it that special detail. Something that may not be picked up easily in photos, but I appreciate it every time I look at the bed.

I couldn’t be happier with how the bed turned out. And it’s so sturdy. We didn’t realize how much the other one moved around whenever we did. Even though it’s the same mattress we both feel like we sleep better now.

Oh, I just realized you haven’t seen the rug I added to the master a couple of months ago! I’ll include that in sources as well as the fabric I used for the upholstery. Check back with me because I’ll be sharing how I built it soon!

I’ve got to know. What do you think of the finished bed? Is this something you might want to build for your home? I still can’t get over the savings!

Looks great! I made a headboard in a similar fabric and added nailhead trim for a little contrast. Amazing what some plywood, batting and fabric can do!
