Immediately after putting up the new drapes in our living room I went to the computer and ordered more for our kitchen. You will not believe how different things look now that we have drapes in our kitchen nook! If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not to add them to a room in your home, I have no doubt this will answer it for you. This space finally feels finished!

Quite the difference, is it not?! I could scroll between those before and after photos all day. These were the finishing touch this room desperately needed. The space is much softer and rounded out now. I feel like before I just saw windows where after I see the entire room.

The Drapes

These are the custom LIZ Polyester Linen Drapes from TwoPages, the exact same Amazon Famous Drapes I just put up in the living room.

  • Color – Ivory White
  • Header – Pinch Pleat
  • Liner – Room Darkening

For the kitchen nook I had these drapes custom made to be 48″ wide (measurement along the header when fully spread out) and 110″ long (they sit just slightly less than an inch off the floor). If you don’t need a fully custom size you can order pre-made sizes in multiple colors on their Amazon page here.

I’m so happy with how the window treatments connect the living room and nook now!

How I Made the Windows Appear Taller

I used one of my window tricks to make the windows appear taller in the nook. Here’s how you can do the same. There’s a bit of a story first to explain why I chose to do that so bear with me.

Before the built-ins were added to out kitchen nook I used to have drapes up. The bamboo blinds were installed inside the window frames and the drapes were hung just a few inches higher than the window so it would mimic the same blind to rod spacing I had in the living room. Here’s a REALLY old photo so you can see what I’m talking about.

Once the built-ins were added I knew that when the time came to add drapes I would need to move the curtain rod up higher so that there wasn’t a visual step down from the ceiling height cabinets to the lower hanging curtain rod. So I just keep the curtains off waiting for when I would find the right drapes. Two years went by until I found them. Once installed at the higher height I had a large gap between the top of the windows and the rod. Yes, it could have been fine. But, our living room right next to it did not have that same gap and I wanted them to tie into each other.

The Window Trick

I moved my blinds from sitting inside the window frame (an inside mount) to an outside mount and hung them above the window closer to the curtain rod. This was a really simple change due to the hardware that already came with my blinds. It’s an upside down L shaped bracket with holes on the top for mounting into the window header (inside mount) and holes on the back for mounting into a wall (outside mount). Look how much taller the windows appear now!

“Yeah, that’s great Shelley, but now when you pull your blinds down they won’t be long enough to cover the window.” You are correct. However, I never pull those blinds down so I’m not concerned about loosing the length. Had I planned to do this 10 years ago when I ordered the blinds I would have simply ordered them longer to accommodate hanging them higher. Actually that’s probably not true. Had I known I would never pull those blinds down I would have ordered them even shorter knowing they are just there for looks and saved a lot of money. Feel free to do that I think that’s genius.

Fabulous. Seeing the original pic, this area has come a long way. I enjoy seeing the function of the room now as a breakfast, casual dining. But the biggest change is the addition of lighter woods with the table & chairs. That shows more now with the blinds higher and new tailored curtains. And it is no longer a distant cousin to the LR & Kitchen. 👏👏👏💕

It definitely feels like it’s much more connected to the rest of the house now. Funny how drapes can do so much!

Our house is pretty private and I always like plain windows instead of drapes and etc. But, this looks really nice. I’m going to have to reassess my windows now.
