easy door makeover

The door to our backyard made me freakin CRAZY bothered me for quite a while now.
It still had the large wooden mini blinds up from the previous owners, and the plastic pieces which were supposed to hold it to the door had long been broken off.
Anytime the door opened and shut the blinds would slam all over the place and scratch up the door and gouge the wall.
Grrrr…

Then Izzy decided it would be great fun to pull the blinds all the way back from the door and watch them slam and make noise.
Grrrr…
Oh, and our dog can get a little demanding when he’s not let out whenever he wants, and thus we have HUGE dog scratch marks all. over. the door.
Grrrr…
So between the blinds a slammin and the 80 pound dog a scratchin you get left with one ugly door.
And, there finally comes a time when the Old English bottle starts to laugh at you for even attempting to cover it up.
So, I finally ripped off the blinds and decided to do something about it.
Of course I was too excited to get them down before taking a picture so this is the best before with blinds I can do for you.
Not wanting to shell out big money for a fancy new door with the blinds hidden between the glass I instead hit up the home improvement store and picked up some privacy film for $20.  And, filled in holes and scratches before slapping on some primer and leftover paint from my front door.
The film is a pretty easy application, but for a larger project like this I recommend having another person around to hold it in place while you pull the backing off.
Oh, and don’t let your dog come in or out while you’re putting it up or you’ll end up with dog hair in between the film and glass.  Yep, not thrilled about that one.
But, I am thrilled about my refreshed and blindless (probably made that word up) door!
A little before and after action, but imagine the before with blinds 🙂
Much better.
I’ll be linking up to these fab parties!

It looks good! Great job! And hey, if someone is staring hard enough to notice the dog hairs, then they have issues and their opinion doesn't matter… By default.

Your door looks great…so much cleaner and fresher without the blinds slamming around. My front door has been destroyed by my dog who gets a wee bit excited when guests come to the door or he sees neighbors walking by. Must try some of the privacy film on the sidelight to the door and it's definitely time to clean up the gouges! Great tip Shelley!

So much better without the blinds! It's actually a lovely door and all that natural light! — lucky you!

This looks really nice–I think I'm leaning towards painting my doors black too-so tired of cleaning finger prints, etc!

So simple and what a big difference!!! I love the idea of the privacy film…I don't know how you do a big dog, we have a mini schnauzer and I'm pretty sure that I've figured out I'm not exactly a pet kind of person. And to think I originally wanted a Great Dane! HA!

your door looks really nice! Your dog seems similar to mine, except we don't have scratches, we have dog slobber smudges all over the glass. They seem to be permanent. Not that I've put that much effort in getting them off though. 😉

I am so excited to see all of the different projects that come out of this challenge and I wish I had an excuse to participate myself! All the furniture you found is amazing – can't wait to see how it looks in the house.

Very nice! I admire your resourcefulness, my friend. Using privacy film as an alternative for your blinds is a great idea, and very impressive as well. It has effectively blocked the light of the sun from entering fully in your home and that, along with the black paint, also has improved the look of your door.

Putting up some privacy film is such a great idea! It also helped with the design aside from the cover and I think the new darker color is a lot better. It's also very attractive. At least you would no longer have to worry about getting blinds that would only probably damage the wall.

I agree that this project and the changes in the door were fantastic. That was actually a huge change that came at a cheap price. Although, the thing that caught my attention was those letters saying "EAT", which is really cute by the way! It's perfect for reminding the kids not to forget their meals!
