Last week I declared this week was going to be Birthday Week.  Well, it’s Wednesday, and I’m finally getting around to it!  A sinus infection and bronchitis (both kids also got hit with sinus, ear and eye infections) on top of new puppy duty will put you back a few days.  Sheesh!

So without further ado, here is Sam’s fox themed 1st birthday party!  We threw this party during Thanksgiving break, out of town.  I’ll give you some out of town party planning tips sprinkled throughout.

Colors were based off of this cute little invite found on Etsy through BonjourBerry.  I added a black and white stripe paper to the back with some double sided tape to beef it up a bit.

On of my favorite things had to have been the gold fox candle holder I DIY’d.  You can check out how I made it here.

We had chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting and carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.  I want sugar so bad right now just thinking about them!!!  The chartreuse cupcake toppers (kinda hard to see in the photos, read SAMUEL and 1) were another Etsy find through ReadyGo and are hot glued onto toothpicks.

Since we were planning this out of town, we had cupcakes and Sam’s smash cake made at a local bakery and picked up some easy pre-made dips and chips from the grocery store the day of.  I even had the background poster (found at the Caravan Shoppe) printed at a local print shop so it wouldn’t get ruined during the car ride.

Oh, what did you say??? Those big round balloons look fake in that photo???  That’s because THEY ARE.  Another tip for ya – If you want those beautiful big round balloons, don’t trust the gal at the party store that says, “oh yeah, we have a ton of those!”.  Go ahead and have her pull some off the shelf and pay for them over the phone.  If you don’t, you’ll get the party store and they will be out of them, and you will be left with plain ‘ol sad balloons like you see below in the real picture.  Humf.  It’s been four months and apparently I’m still not over it.  Anywho… moving on.

The birthday boy wore fox ears and a tail that I made from felt.

Sam was teething like a rabid chipmunk that day.  Thank God for Grandma and her long necklace!

And instead of party hats, guests wore fox ears that they took home as party favors.

Guests also got little paper bags of “fox food” filled with a mixture of M&M’s and pretzels.  The labels were created on Picmonkey.  If anyone is interested in the file, let me know and I post it for download (update: download is available in the sources list below).

His smash cake was totally a hit.
It’s always so fun watching a baby toss it all in there without a care in the world.  I may have looked the same while shoveling a couple of the leftover cupcakes in when we got back to my parents house.

So there you have it!  A fun little fox themed party for my big 1 year old boy!

  5. Okay, so first, I thought the invites were the cutest thing ever. Then I saw the candle holder. Then I saw the ears and tails. And then, cake in the face baby. Good lord, it's all way too stinkin' cute.

  6. I would love to make those fox headbands! Do you have a template?

    1. I don't have a template 🙁 All I did was cut an almond shape out of orange felt and folded it in half around the headband, hot gluing it it place. Then cut a triangle shape out of cream felt and hot glued it in place. Have fun!

  7. I am having a hard time finding the dimensions of the black and white fabric on the ikea website. Was it pretty close to a standard table cloth size? We are going to be covering 6 foot tables and a buffet. I love everything about this party!

    1. Thank you, Alyssa! The fabric is 58.5 inches wide, and since it's sold by the yard, you can make it as long or short as you need.

    2. Thank you for your reply! I'm excited to add similar elements to my son's Be Brave first birthday!
