We have an electrician that is going to be out soon to do some for work us.  I’ve always wanted to update our kitchen island lighting that was left over from the previous owners to two separate pendants.  It would require the covering of one and the addition of two light outlet boxes (I’ve no idea what it’s called).  That’s one DIY I’m NOT comfortable with.  So, I figured while he’s here it would be the perfect time to get that taken care of.

Here’s my problem.  What pendants should I get???

I know what I like, but what I like can be so stinking expensive I feel like I should wait until we’re in a house where we’ll be longer term.  I know, kinda silly, but it’s nagging at me.

Like EVERYONE, I’m drawn to the industrial pendants.

I like them in silver…

and black…

and I even like the glass globes.

Ok, enough of the eye candy and back to reality.  Here’s the current, soon-to-be evicted light above my island.  I also plan on replacing it’s matching friend over the table soon after.  Oh, and the kitchen has been repainted since this was taken.  It’s now the same BM Revere Pewter as the living room, I just haven’t taken any new photos.

Like I said, I’m wanting to find a cheaper alternative to those stunning but pricey fixtures.  Here’s what I’ve found.

This looks the best, but at $250.00 times 2 it’s more than I would like to spend.

This version from Home Depot is $99.97 a piece.  Much better price, but definitely not as cool looking.

This pendant from Lowes has the best price out of everything at $48.00 a piece.  But, I worry it might not look beefy enough.

And an oil rubbed bronze from Lowes at $118.00 a piece.

Then there’s this glass option from Pottery Barn for $150.00 a piece, but I could currently pick up two for $269.00.

Here’s a full room photo.

So, which do you guys think would be the best?  I’ve stared at them all so much I can’t make sense of it anymore!

Do you have some other sources with great prices?  If so, let me know!

  1. Mmm…I think I really like the glass bell pendant at the end from PB. Those are pretty and really classic looking. Have you looked at Rejuvenation at all yet? I would check out their selection too. They also have free shipping right now as well. An update to lighting is going to make a big impact – I can't wait to see what you decide.

  2. What about a special chandelier for your space? You can find all types for an inexpensive price. Have you ever thought about any type of mason jar light fixture? I kind of think they'd look good in your space. They do make 1/2 gallon mason jars, so you could get something bigger. I have seen "chandeliers" on etsy made from mason jars. If it's not your thing, I would go with the pottery barn fixtures because they are beautiful and very classic. I think the Home Depot lights are my least favorite because they don't look quite right. Also, have yout tried going to Yahoo.com and looking at pics of light fixtures? Have you tried polyvore.com? Polyvore is a type of online scrapbook that allows you to shop different items and make a virtual room with them. Hope this helps.

  3. i love the glass ones from pb- i think with the way your space is set up, glass will keep it feeling lighter and brighter.

  4. i like the glass pottery barn pendants. pretty kitchen shelley! excited to see what you pick! have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  5. I'm going against the grain here, but I LOVE the silver pendants. They look sleek and chic and the contrast is wonderful with an all white kitchen!

  6. The glass ones are beautiful! Just a tip: save the old fixtures for when you move. That way you can hang the old ones & take the beautiful (pricey) ones with you when you go

  7. Black ones in the third photo. 🙂

  8. I've had that glass one ripped form the magazine FOREVER. I love it. But I also love the lights in the first photo, so I'd probably go with the $48 Lowes ones. 'Cause I'm cheap. Or poor. Or both. I like the shape of it though, even if it is smaller.

  9. I like the lowes for $48 dollars, I think the chrome would look really great in there, and it's probably the best chrome option all things considered. I just don't know about the size, it looks fine in the picture, but that might be misleading. Good luck!

  10. I totally LOVE the glass PB ones BUT from experience glass pendants are a beast to keep looking good. They get dusty, you wipe them, they're streaky, ahghghg. If you're doing two, I actually really like the small ones from Lowes, without even considering the price. All fab choices!

  11. I'm loving most of these pics!
Hey I'm your newest follower now, and I hope you will follow me back, it would be great to keep in touch!

  12. I think the Arcadian one (although a bit pricey), the Home Depot one or the ORB from Lowes would all look awesome in your space!

  13. Love the PB but totally understand that the price is a little expensive. I like the 3rd one too!

  14. I like the oil rubbed bronze, but since you already have a good amount of dark items I would probably go with the PB glass. Just put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and clean them with it…no streaks.

  15. I like the pottery barn one's the best!!!

  16. Umm…what are the possibilities you could just take them with you and put up the old fixtures when you leave?! OH, that's just me… never mind then 🙂

  17. I love this topic since we went through this back in March. Of course, I got the ones that you said were too expensive, ha!! But, I love them. That price times three sucks, but here is how I remedy it in my mind – I will put up the old ones that I saved if we ever sell and I'm taking these with me to the next house! I tried the others you mentioned and in person, they weren't looking great. But, I also love the glass ones. The last ones are awesome.
