DIY shower curtain from window drapes

About two weeks ago I decided it time to address the shower curtain in Sam’s bathroom. He has been wanting to start taking showers instead of baths and the current shower curtain was just decorative without a waterproof liner. Then there was also the issue of the shower curtain being near the toilet when a young boy was potty training. It was beyond time to trash it. Instead of looking for a ready made one, I knew I wanted to make his new shower curtain out of window drapes. Read on to find out why.

Old Curtain

As I mentioned, his previous shower curtain was purely decorative with no liner. It was actually two of his old nursery window panels pushed together that I stenciled and made before he was born.

New Curtain

The bold pattern of the old curtain never bothered me, but now this softer pattern feels so much nicer in his bathroom. He now has one full panel with a waterproof liner. Showers are now his jam.

I liked my shower curtains extra long so they can be hung higher up. Think of them the same you do window drapes. When you hang your drapes up higher, the room appears much taller. Same applies with shower curtains. Unfortunately, standard shower curtains aren’t long enough for this. So, I make all of mine.

How I Did It

If you want to check out the video of me putting together his new shower curtain, head to my Instagram @crazywonderfulblog and click on my permanent stories called “Shower Curtain”.

I used two window panels to create one curtain that was wide enough for his shower. I used the exact same method for making my daughter’s shower curtain a few years ago. You can find the full tutorial on her’s here.

Basically, one full curtain panel is used for the center and the second curtain panel is cut along both sides so you can add additional width to the center. Once sewn together, metal grommets are added to the top so you can attach it and a waterproof liner to shower rings.

What I like about this is that you have so many fabric possibilities and it’s an easy project! Drapes are already finished so the only sewing is one straight line down both sides. If sewing is absolutely not your thing, in our guest bathroom I used one flat queen sized sheet to create a shower curtain. No sewing needed at all for that one!

So, what do you think? Have I converted you to going longer and higher? Let me know if you’ve ever made a shower curtain out of window drapes!

Thank you, Cassie! I was smitten as soon as I walked past it at Target. As it usually goes, I was only going in for a trash can and left with drapes, snacks, and an alarm clock 😆
