I have been a lover of layered doormats for a long time and I don’t see myself tiring of it anytime soon. Layering a larger outdoor rug under your doormat gives it presence, making it feel much more special and less of an afterthought. I’ve pulled together some pretty options on how you can layer your doormats for summer.

A few weeks ago I swapped out the rug under my DIY door mat to this gray striped one. I love the softer stripes for summer. This is an indoor/outdoor rug so it can easily be sprayed off should I need to. Looking at this photo I realized just how dirty my doormat is. But, it’s still holding up well a year later after a lot of abuse! You can find my tutorial on how to create your own here. The best part is you don’t need a fancy cutting machine to make it.
What size of rug do I need?
For a 18×30 doormat you want a 2×3 rug. A 24×36 doormat looks great with a larger 3×5 rug. The doormat I have in the photo above is a 24×36 and the rug is a 3×5. If you have the space, I love the look of the larger rug. But, I’ve had smaller doormats and rugs, as well as larger in the past (check those out here and here) and honestly they all look great.
Layering Ideas
There are so many options for how you can layer up your rugs, but I’ve put together a few of my favorites below. Smaller doormats and rugs are grouped together on the left and larger doormats and rugs on the right. However, all of the indoor/outdoor rugs come in multiple sizes, and a couple of the door mats come in additional sizes as well.
one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten // eleven // twelve
More Porch Changes
There have been some other changes to the porch as well, and more is still to come. I recently replaced our previous patio chairs with this black metal set. They’re currently showing out of stock, but for the price, I would certainly keep your eyes peeled for them as soon as they come back in.
The price was incredible and the look is spot on. We wanted to have chairs with open legs because we were always worried snakes could be hiding inside the old ones. There have been some poisonous snake sightings by neighbors and I’m completely freaked out. We can now sit confident we aren’t going to be bitten. Next on the list to tackle are large planters for next to the door. And, when the time is right, I would still love to replace our front door with one that shines some light into our foyer.
Ok, so have you tried the layered doormat look out yet? What’s your favorite summer combination? That green striped rug is really speaking to me!
Love the bicycle. With #3 or 9, but I love the green rug too.
I thought of you when I found that bicycle. I knew you would love that one!
