Tackled a quick little project from Martha a few weeks ago.
I loved the idea of being able to have a traveling sewing kit to take with me around the house when I’m doing quick little fixes.  This fit the bill perfectly as I don’t have to worry about having scissors, needles, and thread laying all around the coffee table for Izzy to get into.
I’m a visual learner, so I was bummed when Martha didn’t hook me up with photos to assure me I was on the right path.
So, for all you visual learners out there, here’s a tutorial… with photos 😀
What you’ll need:
{mason jar, fabric scrap, batting, thin cardboard, hot glue gun and glue, scissors}
STEP ONE:  Cut out a circle from the cardboard the same size as the lid.
STEP TWO:  Cut out a circle from your fabric scrap approximately one inch larger than the lid.
STEP THREE:  Sandwich a small amount of batting between the fabric and cardboard circles.  Too much batting can make it difficult to screw the cap back on the jar when you’re finished
STEP FOUR:  Fold over the edge of the fabric and glue to the bottom of the cardboard circle.
STEP FIVE:  Move to opposite side and do the same, working yourself around all edges.
STEP SIX:  If you have too much fabric gathered on the cardboard side, go ahead and trim it back with scissors.

QUICK LITTLE TIP! – If you have an issue with the lid not screwing back onto the jar (I didn’t run into this problem with the first one I made, but did with the second so I thought I’d share) you can pull the fabric back, peel the dried glue off the cardboard, and apply a couple beads of glue to the top side of the cardboard and press the fabric to it before starting at Step 4.  That way there is a little lip around the edge of the top for the lid ring to fit over more easily.

STEP SEVEN:  Apply hot glue to the top of the lid.

STEP EIGHT:  Firmly press the lid onto the bottom of the cardboard.

STEP NINE:  Slip lid ring over.  You may have to tug on the fabric and batting a bit to get it to sit correctly.

STEP NINE:  Stuff your mason jar with any notions you might find yourself repeatedly traveling the house with, screw the lid on, add some pins, and enjoy!

I even added a little strip of magnet to the inside of the lid to make grabbing little safety pins easier.  Or you could use it to run over the top of the carpet to find that lost pin so you don’t jam it into your foot later 😉

I’ll be linking up to these fab parties!

That is so smart (and cute)! I should definitely do this. Apparently, my husband isn't fond of finding pins on the floor.

tried it, worked perfectly. the addition of the cardboard layer helped my jar lids actually close. the last tutorial i tried was a fail because the fabric made it too tight. nice job!

I made these and did not use the cardboard because if you use both jar lid and cardboard the lid won't screw on. It makes it to thick to thread on. 🙂 I just used jar lid
