Sam’s birthday was right before Thanksgiving so it’s always hard for me to get a birthday party post up smack dab in the middle of the holidays. Now that I’m back in the swing of things I thought it was time to share with you his Minecraft birthday party. Like all boys I know his age, he is completely into the Minecraft game. When he told me what he wanted to do for his birthday I would be lying if I didn’t cringe a little because I wasn’t sure how to pull it off without being cheesy. But, I think it came together in the end and he couldn’t have been happier.

Invitations

Online invitations are my favorite way to send birthday invites. You can track rsvp, send updates and reminders. It’s just so handy. The first place I look is Paperless Post, I think they have the best selection. These gaming themed invites were perfect for Minecraft.

Party Decor

You really only need two things for party decorations: balloons and streamers. Sam wanted to play video games with his friends so they playroom was the party zone. After decorating upstairs I had a bunch of leftover balloons so I strung them on some twine and made a balloon garland for the stairway. Might as well put those extra balloons to use!

The entrance to the playroom was turned into a Nether Portal using a purple doorway curtain and streamers. My little Enderman cracks me up here. He’s wearing the mask I made for my Enderman costume I wore to his Momster Bash at school last Halloween. He went as a Minecraft Creeper. I’ll have to share the photo with you guys at the end.

Streamers were taped up and balloons thrown on the ground. I repurposed the kids’ art hangers to hold the birthday balloons and made the other letters out of green cardstock.

Party Tip: A great way to make fun chunky confetti is to cut up crepe paper streamers. Cheap, and quick!

Instead of using licensed party paperware you can get a more modern look by pulling together complimenting items. Minecraft is made up of pixelated blocks in the game so I used these geometric napkins as my jumping off point. Square plates in two shades of green nod to the blocks in the game, and the birch paper straws tie in with the game’s birch trees.

DIY Ghast Balloons

Definitely my favorite decor piece ended up being these DIY ghast balloons. Sam requested big ghasts balloons and he got them. I started off with large white round balloons I had filled with helium at the party store. Then, I used repositionable vinyl sheets to cut out the shapes used for the ghast face. The vinyl worked so well for this project and was only a couple of bucks a sheet (cheaper than washi tape or duck tape). Ghast have these weird tentacle looking things so I cut a silver doorway curtain in half and attached it to the base of the balloons with clear packing tape.

DIY Minecraft Cake

There are some crazy fancy Minecraft cakes out there but I kept this one simple and easy to recreate.

1. Layer three square chocolate cakes, using chocolate frosting between each layer.
2. Frost the sides with chocolate frosting.
3. To create the dirt look grab some Oreos and scrape off the creme center. Blend the chocolate cookie parts up in a food processor or break them up in a baggie with a rolling pin. Pour some crumbs into the palm of your hand and press into the sides of the cake.
4. Frost the top of the cake with green icing and use a piping bag to create the bits of grass along the edges.
5. The candles were created to resemble TNT used in the game. Use three unscented red taper candles and tie them together with thick string. To place on the cake, stick a wooden skewer between the three candles about half the length of the skewer. Then stick the remaining half of the skewer into the cake.

Party Games

Sam saw a Minecraft version of Pin the Tail on Pinterest and wanted to do the same. These characters are so easy to create out of cardstock paper since they’re all squares. The kids put on Sam’s Minecraft mask with the eyeholes covered and used that as the blindfold.

Party Favors

I completely forgot to get a photo of the party favors inside the bags. His friends each took home a little Minecraft plushie and these action figures. The bags were made with more cardstock cut into game characters and glued in place.

Birthday Interview

Every year I ask the kids the same 20 questions on their birthday. It is so fun to look back at all of them and see what has stayed constant and what has changed over the years.

I love this little guy so much and couldn’t imagine life without his sweet hugs or humor. He keeps us fun.
