This year’s decor just might be my favorite yet. I used to be the person who waited until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas. But, the truth is it takes a lot of time to get those bins pulled out and decorations up. We also travel out of state every year for Thanksgiving so there’s a lot of rushing on my end to get things up once we return. It’s just a lot easier to do it early. That way I can sit back and relax after Thanksgiving and enjoy the decorations a little bit longer. Anyone else the same way? I hope you enjoy my 2024 living room Christmas decor and gather some inspiration for your home this year. Or, if you’ve decorated early like me, save some ideas for next year!
I’ll include a source list to my holiday decor at the end of this post.
Fireplace Garland
Pretty much every year I do an asymmetrical garland on the fireplace mantle. It’s a way to give myself a fuller garland look because I can double or triple up the thickness while using less garland. This year I started with this popular Norfolk Pine garland and then layered in a couple of my old faux cedar garlands. Mixing different styles of garland makes for a much more interesting final look. This year, instead of adding lights to the garland I wove the prettiest brown velvet ribbon throughout. So in love with this ribbon!
I do still plan to use Christmas stocking, but will wait until closet to Christmas to set those out. I really love the simple look right now.
Candles
The more the merrier, right? So happy with how all the candles look! Our firebox regularly has battery operated candles going, but I added in some glass vases and hurricanes to up the sparkle factor. And, keeping with the brown ribbon theme, I added two more different types of ribbon to the mix by tying bows to my brass candlestick collection. I don’t normally hop on a trend, but the bow trend got me this year. The bows look so pretty in a large group.
I shot these photos with real taper candles, but later changed them out for these battery operated tapers that have a timer. Realistically I’m just not going to light candles every night. The battery operated ones I bought look so realistic and come on every night all on their own. They just make a lot more sense and I don’t have to worry about the fire hazard.
Christmas Tree
This is a slim 9′ tree that I’ve had for years. The company no longer is around, but I’ll link to a similar tree that is still available. The slim size tucks into this corner so perfectly without the need to rearrange any furniture.
Christmas Tree Lights
A couple of years ago I gave up on my constantly burned out pre-lit tree lights. Instead of buying an all new pre-lit tree I saved my old tree and bought the most beautiful Christmas lights ever. They made my dated tree look brand new and absolutely magical. You can see the before and after in this blog post.
The next year I added some faux clip on tree candles. They have two light functions, steady and candle. The candle light flickers and is such a gorgeous addition to any style Christmas tree. Love the nostalgic look it brings.
Ornaments
I reuse the same ornaments year after year and add to my collection bit by bit each year. Last year I added these gorgeous glass icicles. This year I added the metal bow clips. And to tie the fireplace decor into the tree I added a few brown velvet ribbons to the tree. Ribbon is the simplest and most cost effect way to change your Christmas tree’s look.
Hutch Decor
This antique Ethan Allen secretary desk and hutch belonged to my husband’s grandmother. I don’t normally decorate the inside for the seasons, but this year I pulled out a couple of my mother-in-law’s vintage Christmas village houses. She had TONS of these. I removed the plug-in lights and used battery operated fairy lights on timers. This is an easy way to bring back some Christmas nostalgia without going full blown crazy.
Coffee Table Decor
The easiest formula ever – ornaments in a bowl. The smaller ornaments were a DIY from a few years ago using gold Rub n’ Buff. Larger ornaments were from Hobby Lobby. For a little sparkle I added a candle to a cut glass bowl. And instead of swapping my deep purple stems out for evergreens I kept them because I like the moody color and that they’re not your typical seasonal stems. Not EVERYTHING has to scream the holidays to work with your other holiday decor.
