my bedroom

March 2, 2015

Our master bedroom is one of my favorite spots in our house.
It really doesn’t have anything to do with how it’s decorated.  One of the reasons I love it so much is because it’s the only area in the house that isn’t covered in toys or kid film.
And at the end of the day, when I’m completely wiped out, there is really nothing better than crawling into a soft bed and not having to worry about pulling a stuffed animal or toy car out from behind my back.  And speaking of my back, when I looked at the photos I realized our bed looks like we desperately need a new mattress since you can see two dented in spots.  We have a mattress with air chambers.  I assure you it is most definitely not sad when you lay down on it 😀
My next favorite thing is my must have – a big ‘ol white duvet.  We have a queen sized bed with a king sized duvet.  My husband likes to cocoon at night.  He wraps the duvet around him and rolls.  If we didn’t have the extra large size I would be left out in the cold on my side of the bed.  Not good my friends!  And I like a white duvet because it is so versatile.  I even do plain white sheets.  Switch out your pillows or add a quilt and you’ve got an entirely different look.  Easy.  I like easy.
In the spirit of keeping things simpler, I’m thinking about picking up some new pillowcases I recently found at Parachute.  Their pillowcases are fitted more like a sham with a back envelope closure that keeps your pillow from slipping out.  No more shaking back into place.  Sounds pretty good to me!
I’m also intrigued with their simplified bedding set.  It comes with  fitted sheet, two pillowcases, and a duvet cover.  No flat sheet.  It got me thinking.  Do you really need a flat sheet if you’ve got a comfy duvet covering you?  I usually fuss with the flat sheet at night.  It gets pulled too far to one side or it ends up bunched at the bottom of the bed, etc.  Might be nice to not have to mess with it.
So I’m wondering, do any of you sleep without a flat sheet?  Is it something you would try?

Give up the flat sheet! So comfortable without it!

Flat sheets for me only have a place in super hot countries where you need something to cover you and keep the mosquitoes at bay (they love me) but anything else is too heavy. Otherwise, unnecessary extra bulk and annoyance and more effort in the mornings to make it. Liberate yourself from the flat sheet! They do take a nice photo though! 😉

They were purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond several years ago. They were originally black and then I spray painted them white.

as I was reading, I was seriously looking for the like button next to this comment.."…because it's the only area in the house that isn't covered in toys or kid film…) alas, no like button, but that is exactly the same way I feel about our master. are the blinds you got the Antigua Natural? the color story of your room is similar to ours, and I love the way that natural color isn't too overwhelming.

It's so BIG! I don't know how you keep the kid crap out. I removed a pen, notebook, Frozen people, and socks from my bed before getting in tonight. Plus, access to the backyard is through our room, so there's always a trail. As for the sheet, really? I've never heard of going without. I like it. But I like lots of layers. I have the sheet, a fluffy blanket, a down blanket, and two duvets. It's like a nest. Heaven.

Your bedroom and the hallway leading up to it are beautiful Shelley! So serene and all those windows and the natural light are amazing. Love the grey curtains with the bamboo shades too. My family in Ireland uses duvets without a flat sheet and we have slowly adopted this practice for my kids seeing as they always kick their sheets down to the bottom of the bed anyway. A nice weight down comforter inside a duvet is perfection, a blanket added for the winter. My husband hasn't been able to give up the flat sheet on our bed though. Creature of habit. 🙂

I have the same bamboo shades as you (got the idea from your blog). I was debating adding curtains to my master bedroom windows because I have two sets of french doors side by side in my master and wasn't sure how it would work, but now that I see your photo I think it might. How did you hang your Ikea curtains on your rods? Did you use rings or hooks? Also, did you use one really long rod or are those two rods side by side? I am uncertain how to hang curtains in between my 4 window panels. Thanks so much in advance!

Oh my word, double French doors!!! That sounds amazing! To hang my curtains I used IKEA curtain hooks and hooked them onto my existing curtain rings. For the rod, I had a hard time finding a long enough rod at a decent price so I ended up combining two separate rod sets to give me the length I needed. So the rod is actually 4 pieces all stuck together. I hope this helps!

It seems as tho you live in the kingdom of heaven! The white furniture and clean cloud like white clouds would just put me in such a serene place. I would never leave home with a house like this. Those high ceilings and that wonderful view in the master bedroom are amazing.
