File this project under Covid Made Me Do It. In my last post I introduced you to the room you had never seen before. We had been missing going to the movies and decided to tackle our storage room and finally turn it into the home theater it was designed to be. We have been enjoying this space even more than we imagined, and are thrilled to have such a fun room in our own home. The last pieces are now in place and I’m excited to share with you our finished home theater!

Before

As I mentioned in this introduction post to the room, we had just been using this space as storage and for exercise equipment. The above photo was taken after the room had been cleaned out of excess storage. It was completely packed before this before picture was taken.

Paint

The room went darker with Sherwin Williams Green Black. This is such a difficult space to photograph and get the color to show up correctly since it’s literally a black box with no natural light. Once I took photos I noticed the ceiling could use another coat of paint, yikes! It’s crazy how things look so different in photos than they do with the naked eye. There is a green undertone to this paint which gives it much more character than a plain black. Walls and ceiling are in a flat finish. Trim and doors are the same color but in semi-gloss.

Seating

When you go to a theater the seats make all the difference. We skipped the sectional and dove in head first with these electric reclining theater seats, complete with cup holders. You guys. They are awesome and totally make it feel like you are at the movies. If we ever need additional seating there is still plenty of room for bean bags. You will also see that some exercise equipment still shares this space.

Movie Posters

Not going to lie, I really wanted to do something other than movie posters because they’re just so expected. But, this room wasn’t about me and the rest of our family was set on them. The frames really made the difference here. I went with Highland Hardware acrylic frames in a 24×36 art size (the frames are actually two inches larger all around) with brass hardware.

Media Console

Due to the size of the screen we needed a very long, but low console. I used three IKEA BESTA pieces side by side, and they couldn’t have been any more perfect. The LAPPVIKEN doors gave it a clean modern look, and the NANNARP legs are nice and simple.

The best part of our finished home theater has been being able to pause a movie for bathroom breaks. It seemed like I was always missing a key part of the movie at the theaters. No more! And, you can’t beat being able to wear your PJs and snuggling up with a big warm blanket.

It’s such a hard color to photograph without sunlight!
