You guys have been waiting far too long for me to get the kids’ bathroom makeovers revealed! I promise you the projects didn’t take me this long to finish. I’ve just been struggling to get the time to photograph and post, and then my computer DIED. But, without further waiting, here is Sam’s bathroom makeover! I’ll share a full source list at the end.

After
Vertical Shiplap Paneling
If you recall from this post where I shared my design plans, the reason all of this began was due to the baseboards and DIY shiplap needing to be pulled out. Sam had a habit of not closing his shower curtain all the way which led to water damage around the tub. I really wanted to do true vertical v-groove boards in both Sam and Izzy’s bathrooms. Due to the thickness of the boards I would have had to remove and replace all the trim around the doors, which I didn’t want to do. I ended up using this 4×8 paneling that gives the appearance of shiplap, but is only 7/32″ thick (and WAY cheaper), so I could avoid that. The paneling was easy to work with and attached to the wall with liquid nails. I also went with a taller baseboard than was previously in the bathroom.
The shiplap, trim, and doors, are PPG Paint’s Gray Palomino in semi-gloss, walls and ceiling are the same color in flat. This is the same color used throughout the majority of our home.
Vanity Makeover
Though not visible in the before photo (that was taken years ago) the cultured marble builder’s grade vanity top had yellowed over the years. It was driving me nuts. The original black stone I wanted to use in here ended up being pricey so I opted for a similar look with this black honed granite. I love how the ledge backsplash turned out. The fabricators were urging me to wrap the backsplash to the side of the wall, but I left it open and am still happy with my decision. And what a huge difference it made swapping the cheap chrome faucet out for the widespread polished nickel.
The main reason I chose to reuse the existing vanity was because the floor tile was installed after the vanity went it. Replacing the vanity meant I had to track down tile (if it still existed) or replace all the floor tile. Another expense I didn’t want to incur. And as we all know, paint and new hardware does wonders! The two false drawer fronts under the sink had been caulked together which was always so strange to me. I removed that and painted the vanity Sherwin-Williams Stone Lion in semi-gloss.
Mirror & Lighting
I wanted just a simple clean black mirror and found this one for a great price. The light fixture might be my favorite part of his bathroom. The aged brass finish on it is so beautiful and inspired all the other brass finishes.
Shower Curtain
I really do think a shower curtain can make or break a bathroom. My preference has always been for a shower curtain to be hung higher. Those can be harder to find so in the past I have made my own by using drapes, sheets, or even sewing two shower curtains together.
This time around I went with to favorite custom drape source. These are the Ian drapes in the color Steel with a tailor pleat header. I did not have these lined since I’m using a regular plastic shower liner. They immediately make the bathroom look so much more elevated. Use code CRAZYWONDERFUL to get 15% off your order.
DIY Art
I wanted to do a little something different from regular art prints. Sam has a large piece of art above his bed of a beach and surfboard so I did a nod to that with this DIY locals only beach banner and nautical flag. A lot of the supplies were leftovers from projects so I barely spent anything on the art. I placed them in shadow boxes from Custom Picture Frames which make them look like fancy, expensive pieces of art. Use code CRAZYWONDERFULBLOG for 10% off your frame order.
Slight Design Plan Detour
My original design plan called for wallpaper. All of the samples I ordered in felt wrong in the space so I decided to leave it out. I may end up adding some wallpaper in the future if I find one that really speaks to me, but for now I still think it looks great without it. You may have also noticed I didn’t go with the red in the art or rugs. Once the room started coming to life the red felt out of place, even though it’s connected to his bedroom with the vintage red rug. Just a reminder that it’s ok to change your plans as you’re going along if things feel off!

Loving the new look. That dark granite and the ledge make the room. The tone is more masculine and moody for Sam. Nice job.
I’m so happy I went with the dark counter in here. Thank you!
Love the artwork! Can you tell us how you made the two flags? Thanks!
Hi Susan! I shared a short reel on how I made the Locals Only banner on my Instagram account @crazywonderfulblog. Basically just leftover black fabric with felt letters that I attached with an iron on adhesive. I then sewed the twill ribbon around the edge and added grommets. The flag was more scrap fabric I pieced together, sewed the twill ribbon to the side and added more grommets. No special tricks to it, just playing around and having fun with it.
