Simple Fall Home Tour 2018

I was in Homegoods a few weeks ago and they had just put out their Fall/Halloween items.  So many fun pieces!  While there I noticed a woman whose cart was LOADED with all things Fall.  All I kept thinking about was how much all of that seasonal decor was going to cost.  There are so many great ways to decorate for the season, and I certainly don’t believe one way is better than another, but I do think you can bring the feel of the season into your home without having to spend a fortune.  That is what I’m wanting to share with you guys today, my very simple take on Fall.  Maybe it’s that I’m currently craving less right now because it wasn’t that long ago that we were in full summer mode and every surface was covered in toys, books, shoes, etc.  Maybe it’s just that I need a bit of a breather before diving into the heavier holiday decorations that I pull out for Halloween and Christmas.  Whatever it is, I like it.

There are so many great ways to decorate for the season, and I certainly don’t believe one way is better than another, but I do think you can bring the feel of the season into your home without having to spend a fortune.

Textiles

What do you get excited about wearing when Fall temperatures arrive?  Layers, cozy sweaters, warmer toned/darker colors?  I like it all.  You can bring that feeling into the textiles of your living room.  I swapped the cooler, blue colored pillow covers on the couch for these neutral khaki, cream, and gray covers.  I also pulled in a basket and added a large sweater blanket for easy access when you want a warm layer.  This blanket is actually a queen size that we used to have in our master.  The large size is great for when the kids are curled up with me on the couch.

Don’t have a blanket in the color you want?  You can add a scarf or unused sweater to a basket for that layered look, or even drape it over the back or arm of the furniture.

Nature

I’m always amazed at how much different a room can feel just by the types of plants that are used in it.  For the living room, I put away the succulents that were on the coffee table and pulled together some clear vases I already had.  I absolutely love this clipping from our tree out front.  If you look closely you can see the baby acorns on it.

On the fireplace mantle the single, large summery leaf was replace with more tree clippings that feel a little more seasonal.  The best part of all of this is that it’s FREE.  Pretty much anything can work to give you this same feel, it doesn’t have to be from a particular tree.  Even a handful of weeds from the side of the road can look cool.  Seriously!

Another simple change to the fireplace was swapping my white taper candles out for black ones.  I love dark, moody candles this time of the year.

Edible Decor

There’s not too much decorating that I ever do in our kitchen.  I’m just thrilled to have it clean every now and again!  What I do add are different fruits that I know we’ll enjoy to our fruit bowls.  When I think of Fall I think of apple orchards and apple ciders.  The kids and I love the sour taste of Granny Smith apples so that’s what I’ve filled our bowls with.

How perfect is this feather art for Fall?  It’s a piece that stays up year round, but it’s definitely having its moment right now.  If you’re looking for something temporary for seasonal art, the creator of this piece, Jess of Vol25, sells it as a wall hanging too.

Pumpkins, Obviously

Nothing says Fall like pumpkins.  Stick a pumpkin here, stick a pumpkin there and boom you’re done, lol!  Every year I splurge (I may have spent $40) on pumpkins.  I know, this seems counter to my whole “you don’t have to spend a lot to decorate for Fall” but here me out.  I pick up my pumpkins from the grocery store early in the season and bring them inside (after giving them a soapy bath) to use as decor until it cools off outside.  Then, they make their way out to the front porch where they last me through Halloween and all the way through Thanksgiving.  They make me super happy.  I figure if I’m saving in other areas by using free clippings and minimal decor, I can pick up some pumpkins that I can get multiple uses out of.

Less Can Be More

I fiddled with this dining room for a ridiculous amount of time.  I kept trying to add more hoping to nail that perfect tablescape look and it just felt like too much.  When I finally stopped trying so hard and just let it be, that’s when it felt right.  More free clippings for the win for the centerpiece.

Here’s a tip, if you aren’t finding clippings that you like you can definitely go fake and then fake it some more.  The stems on our piano are fake and I added water to make them look even more realistic.
