We’re just a couple weeks away from Halloween!  I wanted to share with you guys some simple Halloween decorations you can put together using nothing more than black paper.  You can even get the kids to help with these crafts!

Bats

I’ve had these paper bats that I cut out of black paper for maybe 5 years now.  SO easy to make!  Fold a piece of paper in half, trace half of a bat shape, and cut out.  You can get about three bats out of one sheet depending on how large you make them.  If you stack two sheets of paper together before you fold and trace, you’ll be able to cut out two bats at once making it go pretty quickly.  I just use some clear tape on the back to stick them up.  This year I’ve placed them to look like they’re flying out of the fireplace.

Staircase Shadows

I remember first seeing this idea years ago by Martha Stewart and have always wanted to try it.  I wanted to do something that wasn’t too scary for the kids, so we decided on a cat.  Using a roll of bulletin board paper found at the craft store, I freehanded my silhouette onto the back of the paper and cut it out.  Next, I measured my stair risers (in my case 7.5″) and cut the design into 7.5″ strips.  I used tape to stick the silhouette to the stair risers.  The bulletin board paper was a little thin and flimsy, so if I were to do this again I would use something a little more sturdy like poster paper.  That would make it much smoother and easier to reuse without tearing.

Haunted Village

I recently shared this photo on Instagram.  Crate and Barrel had the coolest stand up haunted village that I could not get out of my head.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t available anymore.  I ended up DIYing it out of some glittery, black scrapbook paper and couldn’t be more pleased!  You just trace your design on the back of the paper and use an X-acto knife to cut it out.  The best part is that you don’t have to be precise.  In fact, the more wonky, the better!  Tape the houses together from the back and stand them up like an accordion.  I’ve since moved this haunted village to our large entry table and have battery operated votives sitting behind it giving the windows a glowing effect.  Super cute creepy.

Pumpkin Masks

This is my Halloween mantle from two years ago.  The pumpkin masks are actually cut out of adhesive backed felt, but you could easily use paper for this as well.  The patterns can be downloaded for free here from Good Housekeeping.  What I love about these are that you can easily stick these on any real or fake pumpkin and save yourself the hassle of having to carve out a jack-o-lantern.  The bat and witch silhouettes are cut out of more black paper and stuck into the pumpkins with some wire.  Take everything off at the end of Halloween and save them for next year!

So there you have it!  Easy Halloween decorations you can pull together using nothing more than black paper.  Which is your favorite?

Thank you! The cat actually used to belong to my grandmother. She had it for as long as I can remember!
